Lord Vishnu disguises himself as a thief to rescue a devotee
The only Divya Desam where Adiseshan has his hood above the Standing Lord.

One can start the Nava Tirupathi trip from SriVaikuntam and end with Azhvaar Tirunagari. From SriVaikuntam, one can take an auto/taxi to go around the other 8 temples. This will cost around Rs. 250-300 and will take about 5 hours. One can also begin the Nava Tirupathi journey at Azhvaar Tirunagari and end with SriVaikuntam.

Srivaikuntam is in the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur railway route and the temple is about 3 kms. from the station. It is about 30 kms. from Tirunelveli, from where frequent bus services are available.

The Prime Deity Lord Vaikuntanathan faces east in standing posture, with Adisesha serving as an umbrella – an unusual presentation as he is always the bed to the Lord Who comfortably lies down on him. The Lord’s Consorts, Vaikuntanayaki and Choranathanayaki dwell in different shrines in the outer praakaram of the sanctum sanctorum. This is quite a big temple and we have to cross several ‘mandapams’ to reach the sanctum. In the ardha mandapam, Sri Kallappiran carrying a mace stands majestically on a golden couch, with his lovely Consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi, on either side. He is the Lord of Procession. Next to the ardha mandapam is the sanctum sanctorum.

Lord Brahma had with him secret documents containing details of his creations. That was stolen by a demon named Somukasuran . Vexed by this, Brahma wanted to do penance, please Lord Vishnu and seek his help to recover the lost documents. For this, he needed a proper location. He transformed his sceptre into a lady and sent her to this world to select the place. The present location was her selection. It was a dense forest then. Brahma did his penance and Lord Vishnu appeared before him as Vaikuntanathan . He recovered the secret documents and gave them back to Brahma. Brahma prayed that Lord Vishnu should be present there for ever in the same form in which he gave him darshan. Lord Vishnu consented, Brahma installed the Moola Vigraha there, used his kalasam to bring water from the river and performed abhishekam with it. The water there got the name Kalasa Theertham.

A robber by name Kala Dooshakan, used to pray this Lord, procced on his mission, loot whatever he could and offer half of it to the Lord. Once, when he was stealing things from a palace, the palace guards noticed it and he was about to be caught. He rushed to Vaikuntanathan temple and prayed to the Lord to save him. The Lord took the form Kala Dooshakan and presented himself before the king. When the king wanted to punish him, he transformed himself into Vaikuntanathan and gave darshan to the king. When the king asked the Lord why he saved the thief, the Lord said that he had ceased to be righteous and the real intention was to bring him back to the path of Dharma. From then onwards, the Utsavamoorthy came to be known as Kallapiran.

This original temple, the creation of Brahma, got buried in earth in course of time. The cows of a Pandya king were being taken to this place for grazing. Among them, one particular cow used to go to the spot (where the temple lay buried). Its milk gushed out on its own and soaked the spot every day. The king was informed of this and he asked his men to remove the top layer of the sand on the spot. To his surprise, he found the sanctum the Lord there. The present Srivaikuntam temple was built by him.
Another unique feature of this Divya Desam is that the Sun’s rays falls directly on Lord Vaikuntanathan on two days, on the 6th day of Chitrai (April-May) and Aipasi (October-November) every year. The Dwaja Sthambam (Kodi Maram) has been planted in such a way that it does not hinder the Sun rays falling on the Lord’s feet.
